We support our members across all countries, in all scenarios. Below are some stories of how we helped our customers stay safe

PROTECTION IN SITUATIONS OF CRIME & TERROR

Terror Attack in London
In June 2017 our analysts monitoring global events 24/7 were instantly alerted to the London Bridge terror attack as the horror unfolded. Simultaneously, our state-of-the-art tracking technology showed them that we had US customers in the vicinity of the attack. We immediately tried to contact them to establish their status and provide on-the-spot advice.

Some customers were uncontactable in the first instance, so we continued to try every means of reaching them (phone call, SMS, email, hotel contact) and did not stop until we were assured of their safety. In all cases, on establishing contact, we first ensured the customer was unhurt and didn’t require emergency medical support.

We then advised them what they should do at that moment to avoid the terrorists and then how to get safely away from the scene. We continued to keep in touch with them until they were out of the vicinity of the attack and in a known, secure location.
Carjacking in South Africa
In March 2018 a customer in South Africa was carjacked - all valuables were stolen, and one person violently assaulted.>Terrified and traumatised, our customer swiped the SOS panic-button and received an immediate call from our 24/7 security operations centre.

It contacted the local police and ambulance who arrived within minutes, and further arranged for a private security team to escort the group for the rest of their journey in the country.

We organised their direct flight back to the UK and the group were safely home, less than 48 hours after the attack, having had to pay nothing extra for their rescue and evacuation.
Mugging in Mexico
In January 2017 our operations team responded to an emergency call to help three US nationals who had been attacked and robbed in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. They were left traumatised and vulnerable, without any travel documents.

We arranged for them to be collected in San Luis Potosi by a vetted protection officer, and driven swiftly and securely to the US Consulate in Guadalajara. Here, they were able to collect emergency travel documents, ahead of boarding an international flight home to the US.

At all times during the rescue and evacuation they were protected by trained security experts and incurred no extra costs to their trip whatsoever.

Protection during Natural Disasters

Hurricane in the Caribbean
For one US couple, a once in a lifetime Caribbean trip, turned into the ultimate holiday nightmare during Hurricane Irma in September 2017. Despite surviving the initial storm, reports of violent looting and the imminent arrival of a second hurricane, spread further panic amongst locals and holidaymakers.

The airport was closed and our clients were isolated and terrified. We implemented immediate crisis response including calls with a security expert who provided real-time advice on how to stay safe. We were able to get our clients aboard the only passenger cruise ship available and back to safety, within 48 hours.

During the same time, the US consulate was unable to arrange evacuations and the international airport took a further three days to re-open.
Cyclone in the South Pacific
February 2016 - Cyclone Winston, tore through the Pacific leaving dozens of people dead and tens of thousands homeless and without water. A European student undertaking fieldwork in Fiji was caught up in the devastation, sustaining several minor injuries and losing most of her possessions.

We immediately answered her emergency call for help, mobilising our global network of local security experts. We sent a male consultant and a female chaperone on a challenging journey over land and by air to reach the remote village where the student had taken shelter. On reaching our client they assessed her medical condition, and then escorted her across the archipelago, and safely onto an international flight home.

At all times we kept her family updated and her welfare our priority. At no extra cost, we kept our customer safe.
Earthquake in Nepal
In 2015 the Nepal earthquake killed more than 9,000 people and injured more than 23,000. We successfully evacuated 27 people back to the US and UK from the disaster zone, including chartering a plane to rescue a lone student at the Mount Everest base camp in Lukla. In the immediate aftermath, we flew in extra protection officers to keep our customers safe from the risk of further earthquakes, after tremors and unrest in the local population.

We kept family members back home informed and reassured at all times.

Advance warnings & real-time support

Civil unrest in Paris
In February 2018, a UK-based CloseCircle member, was attending a business meeting in Paris. The meeting overran meaning he had less time than planned to make it to the station to catch the Eurostar home to London.

He was anxious to make his planned train home so as not to be late to see his three children. He was unaware that during his meeting a public demonstration had started at the Champs Elysees, which closed some Metro stations and disrupted his planned route to the Eurostar station.

Luckily, he received an alert from CloseCircle as he finished his meeting which warned him about the demonstration and disruption to public transport near his current location. He was therefore able to plan a different route and made his train home in time to see his children.
Murder and flooding in Central Asia
In July 2018 a group of young travellers set off on the adventure of a life time to drive 10,000 miles from London through central Asia to Ulan Ude in central Russia, as part of the Mongol Rally charity event. CloseCircle monitored the team throughout their epic journey, and regularly sent location-based alerts to tell them to avoid potential serious dangers.

These included: the murder of four foreign cyclists on the Pamir highway in Tajikistan that they were about to cross. On receiving the alert, the group notified the whole rally and together they ensured that the rally travelled in convoy over the mountains for better security.

later, as they approached Mongolia, CloseCircle proactively warned them of floods in the north of the country which would make their planned route much harder to pass. So they changed their route to go through the centre of the country and avoided all flooding and the associated disruption/safety threats.
Shooting in Istanbul
In March 2018, a couple were on a well-earned long weekend break to Istanbul. Excited to see all the sites of this beautiful and historical city their personal safety was the last thing on their minds. Luckily, they were both CloseCircle members, so when they received an alert as they left the Blue Mosque, advising them that there had been a shooting nearby, they were able to quickly change their itinerary.

This meant they knew to avoid the neighbourhood of the shooting, did not get caught up in the resulting civil unrest, felt no threat to their personal safety and so continued to have the perfect weekend break.
Earthquake in Indonesia
In August 2018 a large earthquake occurred on the island of Lombok in Indonesia. Major shaking was felt in Bali where CloseCircle was tracking a member on holiday. Our tracking systems instantly alerted our 24/7 Ops Centre that this member was in the impact area.

The team immediately tried to call her to assess her safety status and see if she required help from us. Unable to reach her at first, the Ops team kept trying every channel until they did. They immediately established that she was physically ok, then set about advising her on how to continue to stay safe. Whilst speaking to her, further aftershocks were experienced, so our experts advised her to leave her hotel and seek safety outside from any buildings, all the time reassuring her that aftershocks are common in the aftermath of a large earthquake. Our team was concerned that there was a significant tsunami threat to our member and so continued to closely liaise with her until our intelligence confirmed otherwise.

Once the tsunami alert was cancelled, we informed her that the threat had passed, but to be mindful of aftershocks and listen for tsunami siren warnings. We were in continuous contact with our member for an hour from the moment we established her safety until we were confident that she faced no further threat to her safety.

Keep Families Informed and Reassured

Earthquake in Indonesia
Jenny had been planning a trip of a lifetime to Bali with her husband for August 2018. A week before she left, the nearby island of Lombok experienced a 6.9 magnitude earthquake killing nearly 100 people and leaving over 20,000 people homeless. Unsure whether to go ahead with the holiday (already paid for) or stay at home safely as her family wanted, she went ahead with the trip, subscribing to CloseCircle to protect herself and give her family at home peace of mind, while she was away.

A week into the holiday, Jenny felt the first after shock from the earthquake. Immediately she received a call from the CloseCircle security team to check her safety. Further shocks also prompted immediate contact from the CloseCircle team who provided her with up-to-date information on the situation and reassured her of her safety. For Jenny’s family nervously waiting for news and assuming the worst back home, the reassurance of CloseCircle’s protection was invaluable.

As Jenny says, “Even before getting out to Bali, which we knew was unstable, it was reassuring for us and our families knowing that we had access to the CloseCircle service should anything happen. Once in Bali and having received the rapid response service from CloseCircle when we had several earthquake tremors, it meant we could relax and enjoy our holiday because there was someone looking out for us. Fantastic service”.
